Features of the Zworks Filtered Meta Search Engine

The Zworks Filtered Meta-Search Engine takes your query, formats it specifically for each of the search engines used (Yahoo!, AOL, MSN, Fast Search, LookSmart, Alta Vista, HotBot(Inktomi), Open Directory, Teoma, Gigablast, Wisenut and Northern Light) and sends it. Returning results are then collated removing duplications and then ranked according to relevance with the higher rankings going to those sites found on multiple search engines. Each engine gets a vote for ranking correlating to positions 1 through 20. A site listed on 4 engines will be rated higher than one listed on three, but if both are listed on the same number of engines, the one with the lower combined ranking score will be placed higher in our relevance listing. Other relevant pages from the same domain may boost a site's ranking as well if they are found by an engine which did not list that particular site. This is a unique feature for metaseach engines and allows for still greater relevancy in the top results. Each listing is followed by the source in which the result was found. The more engines listed following the result, the more likely it is relevant to your query! Results shown as ***Expert's Choice*** are found in the top twenty results from at least five different sources and expected to be highly relevant to your search. We do not search the paid listing engines because the results returned may be attached to one keyword and not the entire query. We also do not search other metasearch engines because we prefer our ranking system to theirs. We allow the engines we search to determine the ranking of the results. Other metasearchers do not always follow these guidelines.

We support Boolean searches with AND, OR, and AND NOT if used in all upper case letters such as they are here. We also support NEAR, grouped, eg:Jerry AND (Tom OR Ben) and Wild card(*) searches although the number of engines we can send these to substantially reduces the available search resources. We compensate by searching deeper into the engines that recognize these commands. Searching by words in the URL (url:zworks) is also supported. If a search engine cannot handle a utilized search modifier, the query is not sent to that engine.

You may use phrase searching with quotations("query"), plus(+) and minus(-) signs in any and all combinations to refine your query in the simple search. In Power Search, these delimiters are created for you.

In removing duplications, sites such as "http://www.site.com", "http://site.com", "http://site.com/", "http://www.site.com/", "http://www.site.com/index.html" and "http://www.site.com/default.asp" become one listing, not two, three or six since they are actually all the same page!. Multiple results from the same domain are grouped within one listing accessible by clicking "More relevant pages from ...". These features, along with our Power Search for more advanced queries, allow us to bring more relevant results to your search.

We are pulling results from the major search engines. We have no control of what sites are indexed. The results we offer are only what they return in response to your query so the only information we have to filter is the name, description and URL of a site. This information is passed through a filter which removes sites with obvious vulgarities (common "four letter" words) and then subjects the title and description of the remaining results to a filtration by word combinations and sequences which are common to adult and hate sites.

Our filtering process is by far the most comprehensive of any Metasearch, but since we are filtering the site name, description and URL and not the actual site, this is not a totally "Child-Safe" filtration process. These procedures cannot remove all sites of questionable content but definitely "clean up" the screen containing your search results by eliminating most surprises when searching for content which you thought unrelated to these areas. You don't have to worry about your children being close while performing a search because of the language they might see. The filter may be disabled for individual searches on the Power Search page. See "Options" below.
